The M829A1 Kinetic Energy round was designed as a replacement for the
M829 KE round. The M829A1 utilizes a redesigned projectile and improved
propulsion system to increase on-target performance. The M829A1 is
combat proven in Operation Desert Storm where the round became known
as “The Silver Bullet.” Said one tank commander during
the Gulf War, “The ammunition is…like a laser beam.” |

The M829A3 is the newest design of the U.S. Army's Kinetic Energy tank cartridge. With an extended range and improved accuracy, this is the most lethal tank round in the world. The M829A3 utilizes state-of-the-art composite sabot, propellant, and penetrator technologies to ensure that the U.S. armored forces will maintain battlefield supremacy well into the future.

This multipurpose round employs a shaped charge warhead to defeat both
armor and “soft” targets.
Full frontal activation makes the M830 effective on tanks with bar-type
spoilers to counter HEAT projectiles. The activation turns the liner
into a molten jet. When the jet strikes a target of armor plate, pressures
in the range of hundreds of kilobars are produced at the point of contact.
This pressure produces stresses far above the yield strength of steel,
and the target material flows like a liquid out of the path of the
jet (hydrodynamic penetration).

The M830A1 HEAT-MP-T was developed as a replacement for the M830 HEAT
round. It has demonstrated a 20-percent performance increase against
bunkers and a 30-percent performance increase against light armored
vehicles. The M830A1 uses a discarding sabot with sub-caliber warhead
and a multifunction fuzing system. It has a unique airburst capability
that is quickly selectable by the tank crewman. The unique fuzing options
and fast time of flight make this round the ultimate warhead in urban
warfare. Know commonly as “MPAT,” it was the round of choice
in operation IRAQI Freedom. |

The M831A1 TP-T round replaced the M831 TP-T. It uses a patented design
that provides a near ballistic match to the M830 service shot. The
unique design provides a low cost HEAT trainer that makes live fire
training much more affordable.
The short maximum range makes this round desirable for training exercises
where range is limited. |

The M865 TPCSDS-T uses a unique, patented conical fin to provide a flat and accurate trajectory
for target ranges. After passing the target range, the projectile velocity drops off sharply to
limit the maximum range to 8 km. This safety feature allows for use on U.S. and European ranges
where permissible projectile travel is limited.

M908 HE-OR-T (High Explosive Obstacle Reduction) was developed to destroy obstacles and barriers
(concrete, rock, dragon's teeth, etc.) set up to stop tanks.
The round is a modification of the M830A1 (MPAT) where the front fuze is replaced
with a steel nose. This provides penetration into the obstacle before detonation. The M908
has demonstrated performance better than the 165mm M123A1 HEP.

Designed to be visually and ballistically similar to the M830A1 Tactical Round.
Consistent performance across temperature ranges.
Low cost due to simplicity of design and automated manufacturing.
Incorporates simulated nose switch to enhance training realism. The M1002 (MPAT Trainer) uses a
design that provides visual, weight and ballistic match to the M830A1 tactical round. The design
incorporates a simulated nose switch to enhance the training experience while providing a low
cost training round that makes training more affordable. Product Qualification to begin in 2002
with Low Rate Initial Production starting in 2004.with Low Rate Initial Production starting in 2004.
