ATK has extensive experience in supporting both manned and unmanned space payloads via long-term broad engineering support contracts with NASA, DoD, university, and commercial aerospace customers. In this capacity, ATK has provided the complete range of system and subsystem engineering services for Space Shuttle payloads and potential International Space Station (ISS) payloads. Additional experience ranges from designing and integrating payloads to fabricating shuttle qualified parts and equipment, configuration management, and satellite flight design. Many GSFC Shuttle Small Payload Project Office (SSPPO) efforts were supported including Hitchhiker, Get Away Special (GAS), Space Experiment Module (SEM), and Spartan, as well as larger Shuttle missions such as the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Servicing Missions and Triana.

Payload Engineering and Mission Integration provides a full complement of aerospace design, analysis, and fabrication services, as well as mission integration, mission operations support, and crew training for Space Shuttle and potential International Space Station (ISS) payloads. Capabilities and experience includes

  • Space Systems engineering and configuration management
  • Flight and ground safety engineering and documentation
  • Vehicle interface requirements, certification, and documentation
  • Payload mechanical and electrical design and analysis, structural analysis, coupled loads analysis, fracture control, and associated documentation
  • Thermal design, analysis, and model development
  • Environmental test design, planning, execution, and post-test evaluation
  • Design and fabrication of mechanical ground support equipment and shipping equipment
  • Flight hardware design and fabrication including complete spacecraft and all associated structures, mechanisms, brackets, adapters, thermal blankets, coatings, harnesses, and power distribution boxes
  • Payload and launch vehicle integration support, requirements documentation, and crew training
  • Investigation with the GSFC ISS Research Program Office (RPO) and Shuttle Small Payloads Project Office (SSPPO) to place payloads on ISS
  • Development of Pro/E models, field-of-view studies, and thermal requirements, and capabilities assessments for ISS payload utilization on the ExPRESS Pallet, Columbus External Payload Facility sites, and Japanese Experiment Module-Exposed Facility (JEM-EF) sites.
