Optics1 Optics2

Optical Systems has significant expertise in spaceflight optics and related systems with recent experience supporting NGST, HST, IRAC, GOES, FUSE, MAP, SWIFT, LASCO, AVHRR, CIRS, TES, SSULI, and GLAS. Optical Systems provides a variety of analytical and hardware engineering capabilities — from sophisticated optical design and analysis to construction of optical instruments, covering X-ray to far infrared wavelengths. Optical Systems works closely with other ATK discipline experts, customer staff, and vendors to provide a systems-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to successfully meet our customers' needs — whether the need is for short-term analysis support or for end-to-end system development.

Optical Systems provides proven capabilities in

  • Optical system specification, design, analysis, and engineering
  • Stray-light design and analysis
  • Geometric, physical, and Fourier optics
  • Radiometric analysis
  • Alignment, mechanical, and thermal tolerance analysis
  • Optical analysis interfaces to thermal, mechanical, and end-to-end codes (Structural / Thermal / Optical)
  • Sensitivity and tolerance analysis support to hardware assembly
  • Optical coating design and measurement
  • Calibration source design and fabrication
  • Optical metrology
  • Detector calibration
  • Interferometry and wave-front sensing
  • Spaceflight qualification of optical systems
  • Experimental laser development
  • Optical component testing
  • Fiber and integrated optics
  • UV detector design
  • BRDF measurements

To accomplish many of these tasks, ATK relies on both specialized and industry standard design and analysis software tools including

  • Code V, Zemax: Optical Design and Analysis Codes
  • ASAP, APART, GUERAP, Trace Pro: Stray-light codes
  • Glad V: Laser Diffraction and Propagation
  • Filmshow: Thin Film Design
  • IDL, HLImage: Image Analysis
  • WISP, FRINGE: Interferogram Analysis

With three dedicated optics laboratories including a Class 10K cleanroom, Optical Systems is able to develop calibration sources, specialized test equipment, and prototype optical instruments. Optical Systems routinely conducts experimental investigations, system performance measurements, and sensor calibrations. ATK laboratories contain a phase shift interferometer, a Fizeau interferometer, FTIR and grating spectrometers, 14-inch collimator, NIST traceable sources and detectors, tunable CO2 and diode lasers, and four vibration isolated optical tables.
