On-Orbit Space Shuttle Repair
In response to a recommendation by the Shuttle Columbia Accident Investigation
Board, ATK developed Non-Oxide Adhesive eXperimental
(NOAX), a specialized material used
to repair the Space Shuttle Reinforced Carbon-Carbon (RCC) wing’s leading
edge.
NOAX is designed to repair damage to the orbiter's RCC surfaces, installed along the leading edges of its wings, its nose, an area just behind the nose cap underneath the orbiter, and immediately around forward attachment points where the orbiter and external tank are connected during launch.
The repair is a simple process that can be performed during an on-orbit extra vehicular activity space walk by an astronaut. This system uses a thin carbon-silicon-carbide plug held in place with a mechanical attachment made of an oxidation protected refractory metal.
