KANSAS CITY, MO --- Alliant Techsystems (ATK), operating contractor for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Independence, Mo., and Burns & McDonnell Engineering were recently awarded the Grand Conceptor Award by the Missouri division of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for their collaborative work on the Explosive Waste Incinerator (EWI) upgrade.
The EWI system at Lake City is the only incinerator of its kind in the country to process mercury contaminated munitions at regulatory permitted feed rates. To meet the Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) emission standards for Hazardous Waste Combustors (HWCs) , the incinerator needed to be upgraded. Now the facility is able to increase process control system reliability and further enhance it’s capability to process mercury contaminated munitions.
“The mandatory emission standards and regulations made modernizing our facility a difficult necessity,” explained John Swanson. “We had to test a series of waste feed rates, waste feed recipes, powder activated carbon feed rates, evaporative cooler temperatures and also optimized bag house operation to increase efficiency and incinerator function to meet emission standards. This was all under the eyes of Environmental Protection Agency and Missouri Department of Natural Resources.”
“This project resulted in an innovative solution that greatly optimizes plant operations and demonstrates ATK’s commitment to environmental stewardship and safety,” said Steve Linneman, vice president and general manager of Burns & McDonnell’s Environmental Division.
