Environmental Compliance

The Environmental Closure of Area 8 Solid Waste Landfill Cells #1 & #2 started in January and is about 80% complete. The solid waste cells #1 & # 2, in area 8, contain dewatered Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (IWTP) Sludge. During a period in the mid 1980’s the sludge from the IWTP was classified as a Hazardous Waste.

The first phase of closure activities consists of draining storm water from Cell #3 (which was never used for IWTP sludge storage) and removing clay walls from cells #3 to be used in the engineered cover for cell’s #1 and #2. The clay from cell # 3 was placed on cells #1 & #2 in compacted layers to meet regulatory requirements. After the clay liner was installed, flexible geomembrane liner was installed to insure proper drainage of the cover. The last phase of the closure activities will be the placement of top soil with final grading. The entire construction area will be seeded to establish a vegetative cover. The groundwater monitoring wells in the area will be monitored quarterly for the next 3 years.
