Lake City Road to Zero Landfill

Lake City Road to Zero LandfillDuring the last year Lake City has worked hard to reduce its’ overall dependence on landfills. There have been a number of programs to start recycling, reusing, and reducing high volume, high tonnage items.

In 2009 Lake City recycled:

  • 1,108,000 lbs of cardboard
  • 754,200 lbs of wood
  • 215,400 lbs of paper
  • 11,200 lbs of plastic bottles
  • 1590 lbs of aluminum cans
Starting in early 2010 Lake City is striving to make dramatic reductions in tonnage going to the landfill. We are doing this by recognizing the wastes produced in each area of the plant and finding ways to recycle each waste.

Lake City Road to Zero Landfill The pilot area for this program was ATK’s Metal Stamping business. In a matter of 4 weeks, they were able to accomplish a 97% Zero Landfill!

ATK Metal Stamping used the sorting area (shown below) and a cardboard and plastic recycling dumpster (shown above) supplied by Smurfit-Stone Kansas City.
