ATK Safety Policy and Safety Performance
Safety Policy
ATK is firmly committed to providing a safe and healthful environment for its employees, contractors, customers, and the public. The safety and health of each employee will always be the first consideration in all aspects of our business. We believe that continual improvement in safety and health performance is key to the success of ATK.
We have established the following objectives for communicating this commitment throughout our operations:
- Instill in all personnel a sense of personal
responsibility for safety
- Provide the resources necessary to comply with
applicable laws, regulations, and corporate standards
- Strive continually to identify hazards, assess
risk, and eliminate unsafe acts and conditions in the workplace
- Develop effective systems and programs to address
the safety and health issues presented by our business
- Evaluate systems, programs, facilities, and processes
periodically to continually improve the application of this policy
- Provide the training, tools, and equipment necessary
to safely manufacture a quality product that meets all our customers
requirements and expectations
- Investigate safety-related incidents promptly,
identify corrective actions, and communicate investigation results across
ATK to prevent recurrence of similar incidents
- Provide effective medical and administrative
case management for all employees who have become injured or ill due
to workplace exposures
- Design and produce products that are safe for
assembly, handling, transportation, and use
It is the responsibility of every manager, supervisor, and employee to
personally accept the challenge of eliminating work-related injuries, illnesses,
and accidents. Each operating unit is responsible to implement the requirements
of this policy.
Safety Performance
ATK has continuously improved safety performance while acquiring additional
locations with varied historical safety performances. ATK’s high
safety performance is achieved though the dedication of management and
employees by continuously improving the manufacturing processes and workplace
environment. One performance measure that is a good indicator of where
ATK’s safety performance has been in the past is the OSHA Total
Recordable Injury Rate (TRR).

The TRR is based on criteria defined
by OSHA, which is the number of injuries and illnesses normalized
for every 100 employees, per year. Through the use of ATK-developed
Safety Management System methods that place a high emphasis on
designing safety into a processes, the TRR at ATK has been reduced
60% since 1995. ATK’s goal of achieving
and maintaining a low TRR is proven, attainable, and sustainable
by implementing standards that are beyond those required by government
agencies and are specific to our industry.
