NASA and ATK conducted a successful ground test of the second five-segment solid rocket motor, furthering the design of a new rocket motor for use in America’s future heavy lift launch vehicles. Data from the test show higher performance and reliability than the heritage shuttle solid rocket booster, which equates to increased safety for crew. |

After 462 days of travelling through space, an ATK STAR 48B solid rocket motor successfully inserted the Magellan spacecraft in orbit around Venus on August 10, 1990. Several milestones were achieved during this mission that included: the first use of a non-spinning solid rocket motor for an orbit insertion burn as well as the first firing of a non-spinning STAR 48 motor. In addition, this mission marked the longest period of time that a solid fuel propulsion system had been required to endure the harsh environment of deep space. |

An F-22 Raptor air-superiority fighter launches an advanced medium range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM) during a missile flight test. ATK manufactures the solid-propellant rocket motor and blast-frag warheads for the AMRAAM. ATK also manufactured composite components for the F-22 that included the horizontal pivot shaft and the inlet bypass screens. |

A USMC AH-1 Cobra helicopter launches a HELLFIRE® anti-armor missile. ATK, and its predecessor companies Thiokol and Hercules, has manufactured over 80,000 HELLFIRE® rocket motors. The HELLFIRE® is an air-to-surface missile that was developed primarily as an anti-armor weapon but has been adapted to other targets and launch platforms. |

ATK MK90 propellant powers the military’s low cost "fire-and-forget" 2.75 inch HYDRA-70 rocket. The propellant is manufactured using a unique rolling method to ensure reliability and precision. The propellant also produces a minimum amount of smoke and a low heat signature: important for battlefield concealment. |

The ATK-powered Ares I-X launch was a success. The first test flight of a new rocket lifted off from Kennedy Space Center at 11:30 Eastern time on October 28, 2009 and was hailed by Time Magazine as Invention of the Year. ATK is the prime contractor for the five-segment solid rocket motor, which is an upgrade to the flight-proven design of the Shuttle booster rockets built by ATK since the inception of the Shuttle program. ATK’s Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile finds and destroys enemy anti-aircraft installations even after the installation’s radar has been shut down. This important leap in technology means a seismic drop in the number of missiles required to destroy a target and a corresponding drop in collateral damage and cost. |
