Orbit Insertion Motors
ATK STAR orbit insertion motors are used to place satellites and other spacecraft into their proper orbit for the mission they are performing, whether that is around Earth or other planets or moons. They also serve as upper stages for launch vehicles and to provide earth escape velocity to spacecraft used for planetary exploration.
The STAR family of robust, high-performance motors and stages makes ATK the world leader in precision propulsion systems for launch to orbit and payload insertion, with more than 2,400 successful flights over four decades and a 100% success rate with current designs.
STAR motors have achieved a long list of unique and challenging space accomplishments, including:
- The first orbit insertion around the moon.
- The first soft landing on the moon.
- Mercury and Gemini capsule de-orbit.
- Orbit insertion around the planet Venus.
- Landing of the Mars Exploration Rovers.
Retro/Separation Motors
ATK STAR retro/separation motors are used primarily to separate payloads from launch vehicles and to decelerate spacecraft as they descend to land on planetary surfaces.
