Radford Army Ammunition Plant
ATK operates the Radford
Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP) in Radford, Virginia, where it produces rocket
and gun propellants and other energetic materials. Built in the early 1940s
to support military ammunition requirements during World War II, RFAAP
today is the only active full-spectrum military propellant manufacturing
center in the U.S.
Since assuming operating contractor status in
1995, ATK has invested more than $50 million in RFAAP. The U.S. Army has
also invested significantly in the plants modernization and consolidation.
In 2005, ATK and the U.S. Army opened a new
flexible energetic production line at RFAAP, marking the first time in
two decades that new TNT for bombs began being produced in the U.S. The
line has the capacity to produce 15 million pounds of TNT annually. It
also has a small-scale production capability for insensitive munitions
and a developmental laboratory, where ATK engineers are pioneering materials
and techniques for next-generation propellants that perform safely and
effectively in all environments.
