Pistol Grip Tool
Description
The Pistol Grip Tool (PGT) is the primary power tool for the Hubble Space Telescope and International Space Station operations.
Self-contained, computer controlled, and battery powered
3/8 inch drive pistol grip style power tool
Programmable on-orbit or on-the-ground for speed, torque, and revolutions settings
Interfaces with many types of mechanisms and fastener types
Integral Multiple Setting Torque Limiter (MTL)
EVA changeable battery
Separate manual ratchet and motorized torque modes
LED Matrix readout of tool functions
Modular construction for ease of new technology integration
Flight Heritage
The PGT flew on the STS-82 and STS-103 HST development project missions, and it flew on the STS-88 and STS-96 International Space Station missions.
Capabilities
Torque settings range from 0.7 to 25.0 ft-lbs in motorized mode
Torque range up to 38.0 ft-lbs in manual mode
MTL torque setting range from 2.0 to 40.0 ft-lbs and above
Speed settings range from 5 to 60 RPM
Revolutions count settings range from 0.01 to 999 turns
Battery sized to provide full 25.0 ft-lb torque on 80 fasteners
Part Number: GE1557000
Materials: Steel, titanium, aluminum, electronics, MP35N, Delrin
Dimensions: 14" x 15" x 5"
Weight: 13 lbs
Operating Instructions
1) Make sure tool is off (switch in back)
2) Load battery
- match key to keyway
- should slide easily; if not, check and reinsert
3) Switch on tool (switch in back)
4) Rotate speed collar to CAL position
5) Rotate Mode collar to manual position – RCW or RCCW
6) LED matrix reads “trig to cal”
- Pull trigger and release
- LED matrix should read “cal passed” when the trigger is released
- Optional step – rotate mode collar to motorized position – MOTOR
- All LEDs should light up. Display reads LED Test
- Pull trigger – LED matrix reads battery voltage
- Full charge: 39 volts
7) Rotate Speed and Torque collars to desired values
- Values are displayed on the LED matrix
- The A-B switch is nominally set to A
- The B setting provides seven more torque settings for contingency use
8) Set Torque limiter value to 0.5 ft-lbs higher than electronic torque value set
9) Add any extension needed with a PIP pin and pull trigger to operate tool
10) Motor will stop rotating at the set torque or turns count value
11) The LED matrix records the peak torque and a running count of number of turns
12) Rotating either the speed or the torque collar when the tool is not running will reset the LED display values
13) To shut the tool off – use the switch in the back
14) To remove the battery – rotate the “D” ring ~ 75 degrees in either direction. Tool must be off prior to removing the battery.
- A typical fully-charged battery will tighten approximately 80 fasteners
NOTE: make sure motor collar is fully in manual detent before using tool manually
NOTE: do not back drive motor in motorized mode
