For the second year, ATK Thiokol sponsored Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) in Science and Mathematics. EYH is a day-long conference for girls grades 6 through 9, designed to encourage their interest in math and science.
There were 69 presenters at the conference, 34 of them ATK employees, giving 30 workshops from which to chose. Each girl selected three workshops to attend throughout the day. Along with the workshops, the girls were provided lunch, t-shirts and entertainment by the keynote speaker.
Brig. Gen. Jan "Denny" Eakle, vice commander, Ogden Air Logistic Center at Hill Air Force Base, was this year's keynote speaker. She showed video clips along with her speech demonstrating that, with hard work and desire, the girls have the opportunity to become whatever they dream of becoming.
Approximately 380 girls attending over 80 schools from Cache Valley to Salt Lake City participated in the conference. Rave reviews from the girls, teachers and parents reinforce that the ATK Thiokol volunteers' support of EYH is providing a needed resource.
"The Expanding Your Horizons workshop was a success this year due to the many volunteers who organized and assisted in the event," said Sally Marsh, EYH chairperson. "The women who presented workshops had original, entertaining ideas that I feel would motivate anyone to continue their education in math and science."
