A record number of students from as far away as Wendover, Utah, and Preston, Idaho, attended ATK Thiokol's fourth annual Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics conference on Saturday, November 6.
Over 440 young women in the sixth through ninth grades experienced a fun-filled day of three technical workshops, lunch and a motivational speech presented by Rian Williams, executive assistant to Utah Governor Olene Walker and adjunct professor at Salt Lake Community College.
ATK Thiokol brought together volunteers from Bacchus, Promontory and ATK Composites, as well as ARUP Laboratories, the Clark Planetarium, Hogle Zoo, L-3 Communications, NASA, the National Weather Service, Northrop Grumman, North Ogden Animal Hospital, local universities and other local businesses, to provide 30 challenging and entertaining workshops.
The conference was created to provide opportunities for young women to learn about careers from women working in math- and science-related fields and to promote the idea that math and science can be fun.
A committee of 10 employees, chaired by Janene Muller and Charlie Hendrickson, organized this year's event. In addition to over 80 volunteer instructors, more than 50 ATK Thiokol employees and members of the community contributed to the event's success.
