A record number of students from as far away as Wendover, Utah; Preston, Idaho; and Park City, Utah, attended ATK Thiokol's fifth annual Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics conference on Saturday, November 5, at Mt. Ogden Middle School.
This year's conference had record attendance with over 540 young women attending—up 100 attendees from 2004, which was also record attendance. This year the sixth through ninth grade students experienced a fun-filled day of three technical workshops, lunch and a motivational speech presented by astronaut Janice Voss.
ATK Thiokol brought together volunteers from Bacchus, Promontory and ATK Space Systems, as well as ARUP Laboratories, the Living Planet, NASA, the National Weather Service, Space Dynamics Laboratory, North Ogden Animal Hospital, local universities and other local businesses to provide 31 challenging and entertaining workshops.
The conference was created to provide opportunities for young women to learn about careers from women working in math and science-related fields and to promote the idea that math and science can be fun.
A committee of 10 employees, chaired by Charlie Hendrickson, organized this year's event. In addition to over 92 volunteer instructors from northern Utah, more than 50 ATK Thiokol employees and members of the community contributed to the event's success.
