ATK Space Systems hopes over 550 girls were inspired to pursue careers in math and science after attending the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference November 1.
The seventh annual Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics conference, organized by Launch Systems and held at Mt. Ogden Middle School, had girls in grades six through nine talking about math and science. The conference goal is to get young women excited about and interested in science and technical careers, where the majority of these jobs are filled by men. The 27 varied hands-on workshop activities gave participants an idea of what working in those careers might be like.
The workshops included a variety of activities including learning how to become an astronaut, making rockets, creating slimy goo, crime scene analysis and working with a veterinarian. Parents also had the opportunity to attend a session called College 101, aimed at helping prepare them for getting their daughters ready for college.
The conference organizers and presenters where made up mostly of Northern Utah women who volunteer their time for this event.
The girls in attendance represented over 100 different schools from across Northern Utah. The annual conference has become a sought-after activity, reaching maximum capacity several weeks in advance of the event.
The Expanding Your Horizons Network is a national organization whose charge is to spark the interest of young women to pursue careers in the math and science fields. The goals of the Expanding Your Horizons program are to promote how math and science can be fun, provide opportunities for young women to meet and learn about careers from women working in math- and science-related fields and encourage young women to take full advantage of opportunities to gain the maximum amount of education in math and science before graduating from high school.
