against armor targets, GAU-8 ammunition (PGU series) is currently in use with
the 30 mm GAU-8/A Gatling gun on the U.S. Air Force's A-10 Thunderbolt
close-support aircraft. Its application on the GPU-5A gun pod is designed to
provide anti-armor capabilities to the A-7, F-4, F-5 and F-16 aircraft.
The GAU-8/A gun is capable of firing rates of 2,100 and 4,200 spm. The
lethality performance demonstrated against tank targets in extensive firing
evaluations has led to the expansion of this capability through the GPU-5A gun
pod. Deployment of the pod, together with the A-10 capabilities, will provide
the flexible firepower required to defeat tank threats today and into the
The primary ammunition of the 30 mm family is the armor-piercing incendiary
round, PGU-14/B. With the kinetic energy needed to defeat armor, this projectile
possesses a high-density penetrator and demonstrates the follow-through
fragmentation and pyrophoric effects for maximum effectiveness.
The companion high-explosive incendiary round, PGU-13/B, provides the
necessary capability for the defeat of light materiel targets. As an added
advantage, it incorporates extended-range incendiary capability against fuel
To complete this family of ammunition, GAU-8/A ammunition offers a low-cost
target practice round, PGU-15A/B. Used for training applications, this design
also has been proven effective in applications against light armor.
