ATK Health FairThe 2nd Annual Heart Healthy ATK Fair kicked off on Valentine’s Day, the perfect day for employees to learn about heart health and other wellness information. Space Systems Division employees received timely information on healthy lifestyles through health screenings, a blood drive, demonstrations, fitness activities, lectures from industry experts and access to local health services and resources.  The activities stretched across three buildings on the Beltsville, Maryland campus.

Employees visited interactive exhibits that featured massage therapists, health food retailers, vision and hearing screenings along with blood pressure and oral cancer tests.

Mary Scianna, Manager of Environment, Health and Safety, said the fair was a great way to help employees stay fit, feel better and become more productive on the job and at home.

“As I conducted my research on health fairs and how they benefit employees, I learned that encouraging healthy habits can reduce absenteeism on the job and cut medical costs. Our goal was to provide employees with the tools they need to maintain healthy lifestyles and become proactive about their health.”

A new feature at the fair included continuous presentations from eight health care professionals during a Speaker’s Series titled “Get Educated.” The topics ranged from “Signs of Alzheimer’s Are You at Risk?” to “Heart Care for Women.”

Nicole Mauck, a Senior Buyer in Supplier Management, said she learned a lot from the presentations and displays.

“As an ex-smoker, I really wanted to participate in the oral cancer screening. I also picked up some healthy eating tips for my son and for myself. In fact, I won a fruit basket as a raffle prize and plan to put it to good use!”

Employees competed in a new event this year—the Presidential Fitness Challenge– and  also shook off workplace stress with mediation and kickboxing classes.

At the end of the day, the fair was a win-win event for employees and the community.  The Health Fair Committee also solicited feedback from employees on this year’s event and will apply lessons learned for the future.
